Sure, your iPhone case can protect your Apple device, but can it put bring an attacker to his (or her) knees?
Since they began selling it in February, the makers of a 650,000-volt stun gun masked as an iPhone 4/4S case have sold thousands of the covers, according to a CNN Money report.
Yellow Jacket sells the case for $139.99. The company was founded by two 24-year-old Louisiana State University college buddies, Seth Froom and Sean Simone. Froom told CNN he came up with the idea after he was held up at gunpoint in his home in 2011 and the only thing he had in his hand as he lay on the floor was an iPhone sans case.
In 2012, they won a business competition at LSU and used the $5,500 jackpot to file for a patent application and marketing video for their new creation. They raised $100,000 on Indiegogo, a website that allows innovators to raise money for an idea, and found a manufacturer in China to make the device. The company’s sales have reached $250,000 so far.
The shock that’s delivered by the stun gun can be mild or extremely painful. It has safety features to prevent users for inadvertently zapping themselves. Yellow Jacket says the case is also capable of giving your phone up to 20 hours of additional standby battery.
In September, Yellow Jacket plans to launch a case for the iPhone 5 and for the Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4, according to the CNN report. The company also envisions cases for law enforcement agencies.
